Create mapping lists from metadata entries to Commons entries for SMVK-Cypern-2017-01
Closed, ResolvedPublic2 Estimated Story Points

Description

Create mapping lists for keywords (and persons, places etc.) to categories (and Wikidata objects, Creator templates, etc.). To convert from the terminology of the <GLAM> to that of Wikimedia Commons.

  • Create pages of mapping lists:

Cypern keywords
Cypern places

  • Do basic mapping (i.e. easy ones that don’t need specialist knowledge or which can be done automatically (via known identifiers, Wikipedia links etc.)).
  • Identify a few suitable entries into the category tree. And make a few example mappings (show what the syntax looks like, suitable categories etc.).
  • Invite/force <GLAM> to map keywords to categories for instances which occur with more than a certain frequency.
  • Determine if any new Creator templates, wikidata items, categories are needed.

Examples: (Mapping list places)

Event Timeline

@Lokal_Profil We've got 10 images from milia, Famagusta (see mapping table). I'd like to create Category:Milia,_Famagusta - but is that correct syntax? It looks weird but I found another Milia named according to that pattern <town><comma><underscore><district>. That would also follow how the wikidata item is named.

About to create [[Category:Vouni, Cyprus]] 29 occurances, see https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Medelhavsmuseet/batchUploads/Cypern_places. I put it in the mapping table even though it's not created yet.

Is that reasonable @Lokal_Profil

These are the places I found that have been mapped in the keywords list.

Todo @Mattias_Ostmar-WMSE:

  • Look through once more after reading this article
  • Mail SMVK to go through the keywords list for places once more

That should work. If nothing else Category:Milia,_Evros set a precedence which we could follow. Worst case scenario it gets renamed.

Definitly ok to create categories you know will get multiple images. I would even say you could create a few more of the places you have mapped to wikidata items. If you say something like "Created in preparation for batch upload" in the edit summary then it's ok that they are empty until the images are uploaded. Just remember to:

  • Add it as a commonscat to the wikidata item
  • Categorise the category itself according to similar places.
