[docs] Record video tutorial(s) of basic Toolforge access and use
Open, LowPublic

Description

@bd808 met with @Jane023 at WMCON 2017 and we talked about her difficulties in keeping track of all the steps needed to access a Toolforge server to update a tool. She suggested that we could pair in a hangout to walk through getting her setup to do useful work and record that to share with others.

Steps to cover:

  • make ssh keypair
  • upload public key via Striker
  • ssh to tools bastion
  • become tool
  • start webservice
  • change PHP script:
  • Example task: A recurring wishlist item is often a script based on existing scripts by Magnus Manske or others (targeting a different language than English, or using a different type of Wikidata item to create a different stubby template).
    1. copy an existing script, such as https://tools.wmflabs.org/magnustools/prepbio.php
    2. make it work for Dutch Wikipedia (slightly different category setup for biographies)
    3. copy https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikidata-todo/creator_from_wikidata.php for Commons to make another template creation option
    4. "institution_from_wikidata.php"
    5. "artwork_from_wikidata.php"
  • restart webservice

@Jane023 feel free to edit the checklist I've started in the task description to add/remove things that you think we should cover. Also, what operating system are you using? I'll try to tailor the steps for your specific case.

PS the stroopwafels were delicious :)

Sadly unlicking this stale cookie. I did update the description a bit which may help when someone gets the time to work on this. A new developer advocate will be joining the Developer-Advocacy team soon, and this may give them some ideas about a useful project for the Toolforge community.
