African Wikimedia Developer program in Ghana - Day 2
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Summary of what will happen in day 2 and all activities done during the event;

  • Recap of Day 1 activities including @Flixtey's presentation on an Overview of the Wikimedia movement and volunteer opportunities.
  • Q/A session about general programming technologies related to MediaWiki before the event started (pre-event).
  • Participants successfully installed MediaWiki on their localhosts.
  • At the event, we worked on installing a boilerplate and an example extension that we used for hacking.
  • Structure/Architecture of MediaWiki was looked at and also that of extensions and how to build extensions.
    • Topics such as i18n, configuration and logic of both the mediawiki core and the example extension was discussed which all other extensions follow.
  • We plan to update the Example extension during follow up (post event) in order to keep working with developers in Ghana to improve mediawiki.
  • We agreed to have a project work board for the AWMD project so as to have some tasks for developers to keep working on for easy management of the project on phabricator. @Aklapper, we will get in touch with you on this.

To conclude, it was a successful event since hit our target of participants and also covered all that we prepared for and users asked so many questions and we got feedback which we will share soon.

Event Timeline

This is great! Thank you @D3r1ck01 @Flixtey and other contributors who have made this unprecedented workshop possible. And of course, thank you to all participants!

A couple of questions:

  • Are there any pictures?
  • Have you thought what to do to retain at least 10% of the participants at lesast during the next 12 months? It would be great to see other African volunteer developers thriving in the next months, and meeting them at Wikimania 2018!

@Qgil, we really appreciate the support of your team on this project as well. It was a true milestone for us and we are anxious for the outcome. You can find out more about the event from our report here.

  • We have photos which I am yet to upload to commons however you can have a quick look at our post on facebook.
  • About ensuring sustainability, we will continue furnish the group with updates and news, send tasks (tickets) of bugs and continue to keep them active. We also discussed the possibilities of quarterly call ins which will possibly take off from next quarter.

@Flixtey, @Qgil, can we mark this ticket as resolved? Or is there something else to discuss about here?

Please resolve it, and thank you very much again for setting this great precedent!
