Aramaic web fonts failed to present their contextual forms
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

After I applied Aramaic web fonts into Template:Syriac at English Wikisource, all the letters failed to present their contextual forms. For example, ܐܣܛܪܢܓܠܐ‎ → ܐ‌ܣ‌ܛ‌ܪ‌ܢ‌ܓ‌ܠ‌ܐ‎

You can see the problem here: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Template:Syriac/testcases

Event Timeline

We cannot do anything about rendering issues, unless there is an updated version of the font that fixes them.

I got these fonts from Beth Mardutho website, then I converted original font files to WOFF/WOFF2 format in Everything Fonts website. Hopefully, they would works well as expected.

I reconverted them into TTF format.

What does that mean? http://www.bethmardutho.org/images/fonts/melthofonts-1.21.zip linked from http://www.bethmardutho.org/index.php/resources/fonts.html ? Or somewhere / something else? This is important because of font licenses Which needs clarification here.

Looks like license is not suitable: "Copyright © 2018 Beth Mardutho. All Rights Reserved."

Oh I forgot to show you license. But don't worry, these fonts has a license included in melthofonts-1.21.zip, which gives you right to use and distribute them.

Well, the license may give you a right to use and distribute the fonts but "The Font Software may not be modified, altered, or added to [...]".

Oh... so how do you generate web font files while you receive these fonts? Why you bring broken fonts to everyone?

@Great_Brightstar: If this is still a problem, could you attach screenshots? It's hard to reproduce or understand problems if there is no difference shown locally:

Thanks a lot.

Unfortunately closing this Phabricator task as no further information has been provided.

@Great_Brightstar: After providing a screenshot and info about web browser, web browser version and operating system, and if this still happens, please set the status of this task back to "Open" via the Add Action...Change Status dropdown. Thanks!

Unfortunately, it's still reproducable, see my screenshot.

Thanks. The two "Serto" entries look different here. I assume my local fonts are correct (Firefox 87, Linux)?
Posting my screenshot so we have something that finally allows some visual comparison in this ticket.

Here are the same texts produced on LibreOffice 7.1, using Noto fonts.
