Movement strategy and the technology Working Group
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Wikimedia wants to become the essential infrastructure in the ecosystem of Free Knowledge. But how do we actually get there, and what do we need to change in order to move in our new Strategic Direction at full potential? Phase 2 of the movement strategy process wants to answer these questions. The first step is now to identify the key thematic areas and to set up a Working Group per area that will develop recommendations for change for the movement.

Phase 2 has been kicked-off at the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin in April, and one of the outputs is the first draft of a working group on the broad area of technology, engineering, product, platform (in short, Technology, but please note that this title is subject to change based on community input).

In this session, I would like to briefly present the current status of the Movement Strategy Process, bring the first outputs from WMCON to WMHACK and then start building upon the Working Group draft together with the participants.

I would like to discuss questions like

  • What are the key high level questions that need to be discussed in your thematic area?
  • Who needs to be in this Working Group?
  • How will the group work towards the recommendations to answer the key questions?

At the end of the session, I will also present the next steps and ways how to further contribute.

Here's a link to the slide deck. I will upload it to Commons after applying some cosmetics.

And here's the etherpad from the magic strategy table that is open Saturday and Sunday. https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/wmhack2018-mspro (photos here: https://twitter.com/antischokke/status/997775878779297792
