Curation toolbar opt-out in preferences
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Gadgets should be configurable via the preferences window. The page curation toolbar isn't. So anyone with NPR rights that doesn't want to use it is constantly annoyed by its presence (even if they never use it and prefer twinkle)

Should be 'on' by default after the New Page Reviewer userright is granted, but should be able to be unticked in 'Preferences' so that it can be disabled entirely by editors who don't want it to pop up ever (New Page Reviewers or Admins who prefer to use other tools).

Event Timeline

When was this move to force-on? The behavior for the last years has been that it could be activated, but minimizing and dismissing it would keep it off unless you specifically turned it back on with the 'curate article' link?

Recently people were having trouble getting it to load and the WMF released a fix, but this now means that it auto-loads whenever you open a page from Special:NewPagesFeed. The old way was ''OK'', but it often was not clear why the Page curation toolbar wasn't showing up, and we got a lot of annoyed messages from reviewers trying to figure out how to get it back. I suspect some reviewers probably couldn't figure out how to turn it back on again and stopped reviewing.

It would be much better to simply have a toggle in the Preferences pane.

@Insertcleverphrasehere: Adding PageTriage project tag so this task can be found when looking at PageCuration tasks at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/mediawiki-extensions-pagecuration/ . No need to add team tags like Growth-Team; that is up to each team (or automatic filters).

@Insertcleverphrasehere thank you for filing this issue. My read of your enwiki comment is different from what I understand by this task, though. On enwiki, you wrote:

It should be possible to make ?showcurationtoolbar=1 and the 'curate this article' link work on any article, not just those in the feed.

I understood that to mean that a New Page Reviewer user should be able to see the curation toolbar on any article, whether or not it is present on the Special:NewPagesFeed page. But this task seems to focus on a different problem:

Its presence is configurable if ?showcurationtoolbar=1 is not in the URL. If ?showcurationtoolbar=1 is not in the URL and you minimize or close the toolbar, then next time you load a page that's in the PageTriage queue, you'll see it in minimized or closed state. If you left it maximized, it will load in maximized state.

When a New Page Reviewer is on Special:NewPagesFeed, we added ?showcurationtoolbar=1 to the URLs because we were getting reports from users that the curation toolbar wasn't showing up as they expected. (Some people missed that "Curate this article" is on the left.) We could remove the addition of the query parameter, if that's what reviewers would prefer. Our assumption was that if a user clicks on an article from the Special:NewPagesFeed, they want the curation toolbar to appear maximized. Is this assumption incorrect?

Oh, I just saw T207485: Enable page curation tools to be loaded on any page (optionally), so please disregard that bit :)

Listing #80 is for T207485. This task is for listing #79
