eqiad: Re-connect cage cameras
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

During the switch upgrade there was confusion on whether or not the cameras were to be re-connected. Currently they are disconnected from the network switch ports.

  • re-connect the current cameras re-cable as necessary
  • create an equinix ticket to install camera for backside of row D (we have cameras on-site)
  • verify switch ports and enable
  • verify dns entries

Event Timeline

Some cameras have been re-connected as I am in their racks, others will need me to run new cables to reach the new switches. Some progress as I get the chance.

Front of Cage Camera Rows A/B -> asw2-a-eqiad ge-1/0/2

Camera Row A Back asw2-a-eqiad ge-8/0/1

Camera Row A-B Front asw2-a-eqiad ge-1/0/2
Camera Row A-B Back asw2-a-eqiad ge-8/0/0

@Cmjohnson all of the ports show as "physical link down", could you have a look? Thanks!

@faidon the cameras are connected, I am wondering if these ports have PoE?

They don't, these aren't PoE switches. I didn't know these cameras required PoE. So, two options I suppose:

  • Use PoE injectors
  • Hook them up to (old) EX4200s. Are we using any of them for mgmt switches yet? Cameras seem a better fit for the mgmt network than the production network anyway, right?

I agree that cameras are a better fit for the mgmt network. The old switches are still in the racks for row A-C, I removed them from row D awhile ago. I know that we have been talking about using the ex4200's for mgmt but I don't think we've gotten past the planning stage. One other blocker besides re-racking them in row D is we still need to migrate servers off the old stack in row A.

I created T213128 for using EX4200 as mgmt switches. Even though it would be the best option in the long term, it comes with its own challenges.

@Cmjohnson We can start by connecting "Camera Row A Back" to any POE ports (I think <= 7) on msw1-eqiad, which is in rack A8, and configuring it.

This to confirm they work properly.
If successful and depending on T213128 we can either:

  • Order POE injectors, pretty cheap
  • Replace only the switches needed for the cameras with (un)managed EX4200
  • replace all Netgears with (un)managed EX4200

Then "Camera Row A Back" can be moved to a "leaf" mgmt switch.

Moving this to blocked on my workboard until I can rack and setup the ex4200's for mgmt.

Spoke with Arzhel and I am going to connect 1 camera to msw1-eqiad

Resolving this task. It's been over a year, since there was any progress on this, plus we can utilize the onsite Equinix cameras if something were to ever come up. Thanks, Willy

sounds like this was declined instead of resolved. is there more to cleanup?

Hi @Dzahn - we decided that this was no longer needed. There's plenty of cameras onsite run by Equinix (for eqiad) and CyrusOne (for codfw), which we could always default to if ever needed. Thanks, Willy
