Enable uploads for MEI (.mei) on Commons
Open, Needs TriagePublicFeature

Description

Per T208494.

The Music Encoding Initiative's file format (.mei) is open source, as is the rendering software Verovio. Of the software mentioned in the RfC, Verovio also has possibly the most sophisticated online viewer/playback software.^ No MediaWiki extension exists for the format, to my knowledge.

There is no requirement to enable thumbnails or playback before it becomes possible to upload files to Commons; there was (I think) no expectation in the RfC that this would occur immediately due to the Community Wishlist Survey proposal for such not reaching the top 10.

^ This is somewhat misleading, as the LilyPond extension doesn't have interactive playback, Braille isn't really comparable for obvious reasons, and MXL doesn't exist – so essentially, it's a little better than the MuseScore online renderer, which is unfortunately closed-source, so we couldn't use it anyway.

Event Timeline

I agree that MEI could be useful without Verovio, and Verovio without MEI. Would it be good to split out Verovio into another task?

MEI is extensively used by academics working on PD works, and will handle non-standard-Western music formats.

I think it would be appropriate to split out Verovio. The capability would probably have to come after thumbnailing, since it would be illogical to only be able to show a score through interactive JS.

What I was presuming would happen was that the MuseScore, LilyPond and Verovio software would all be used separately for thumbnailing to avoid export issues,^ which would be fine except for the fact that Verovio, of them, is the only interactive software that already exists as an open-source web application, and I'm not sure how appropriate it would be to have animated playback for only MEI scores (I didn't even know MEI existed before the RfC, and to me it appears that it's not widely used outside specific academic circles). LilyPond doesn't have an officially sanctioned exporter to MusicXML, which precludes using Verovio's JS app for rendering all of the scores.

Also, with regards to the interactive app, I still personally dislike the sound quality and the lag between the audio and the highlighted notes, although if those issues are resolved I think it would be better than, say, the MuseScore closed-source web player. I don't think those things are deal breakers but they do make the experience overall much less useful.

^ The only other option that makes sense to me is converting everything to LilyPond.
