Can definitely confirm for the newest versions of Chrome, Firefox and Edge. No browser extensions seem to be involved since this issue also occurs on Chrome's guest mode. The image viewer doesn't show immediately after clicking the image. It only shows after reloading the page and if the viewer is closed and another image is opened it also shows the viewer immediately. I'd love if this could be fixed quickly.

Not easily. Long term we'd prefer to merge the two versions (see T77349 for the stalled discussions around that). You could probably write a gadget to do this if you wanted.

Thanks for letting me know that it could be loaded as a gadget. But I've no idea how to load it in mobile view though. I'll ask for advice on how to do it on #wikimedia-tech this Wednesday.
