Have the Search widget on the site use the new Search API
Open, In Progress, LowestPublic

Description

The Search widget on the site is currently wired to the usual MediaWiki search, but really should be wired to the new Search API that allows for Searching for labels of object, i.e. here:

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/extensions/WikiLambda/+/622855

This probably can be mostly stolen from Wikidata.

This is not the correct way; we should introduce hooks on native OpenSearch. See T190454#4092077

Yes, you are right, that would be the right thing to do. (My guess that a proper implementation there would also fix the Lexeme search in Wikidata?, but that's an aside).

Alas, I am pretty much in the same boat I was when we decided to do this for Wikidata, and I am afraid I would do the same bad thing again, in order to get this functionality unblocked.

If there was a proper solution, I would be very happy to *use* it. Also, I chatted with Lydia and she said she would prioritize the resources to *use* that proper solution for Wikidata as well.

So if someone implements the right way, I would be very happy.
