Request creation of pipelinelib-experimental VPS project
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Project Name: pipelinelib-experimental

Wikitech Usernames of requestors: @dduvall, @thcipriani, @jeena, @dancy

Purpose: Release Engineering wants to run a variety of experiments with Blubber/PipelineLib around MediaWiki containerization and different underlying image building technologies. It would be very helpful to have a project in which to conduct experiments so we can better prove/disprove our ideas.

Brief description: Much of the MediaWiki containerization work is outlined in T259817#6395133 and subtasks of T260828: Experiment with PipelineLib/Blubber driven MediaWiki container image pipeline. I also expect to spin up 4-5 instances of buildkitd and make them available to some experimental CI jobs.

We may also want to move the experimental Docker registry out of the integration project and into this new one.

How soon you are hoping this can be fulfilled: Preferably by next week as we'll be having our team offsite and this could help us in our PipelineLib related hacking sessions.

Event Timeline

The majority of project requests are approved, but there are some things which will cause further discussion:
...
"Umbrella" projects with a broad scope, such as all the work to be done by an engineering team or a large problem space.

"Umbrella" projects with broad scopes are difficult to track over time because of organizational changes and lack of continuity in ownership.

Can this request be scoped to PipelineLib work rather than any random project by the RelEng team? Alternately, something like T247517: Request creation of 'sre-sandbox' VPS project could be granted, but take note that the compromise made there was that instances in the sre-sandbox project will be automatically deleted 15 days after they are created.

Sounds like a good idea. I've updated the project name and description to reflect that limited scope.
