Requesting access to analytics-privatedata-users for urbanecm
Closed, ResolvedPublicRequest

Description

Requestor provided information and prerequisites

This section is to be completed by the individual requesting access.

  • Wikitech username: urbanecm
  • Preferred shell username: urbanecm
  • Email address: martin.urbanec@wikimedia.cz
  • Ssh public key (must be dedicated key for wmf production): already in operations/puppet
  • Requested group membership: analytics-privatedata-users
  • Reason for access: See below.
  • Name of approving party (hiring manager for WMF staff): discussed with @MMiller_WMF, and @Ottomata, analytics-privatedata-users group owner; others WMF employees can probably provide +1 as well
  • Requestor -- Please Acknowledge that you have read and signed the L3 Wikimedia Server Access Responsibilities document:  signed already as part of T192830
  • Requestor -- Please coordinate obtaining a comment of approval on this task from the approving party.
Rationale

I do Wikimedia work in multiple capacities, and this access would be useful in multiple of them.

Volunteer work

As a deployer, I frequently need to make SQL queries on raw database, incl. data that are included in production databases only, and can't be queried on labs. When such a need arises, I usually query production database directly. However, I feel that running queries on production database server without a real need to isn't a good practice, and that those queries should be executed at analytics replicas instead.

Recent tasks that included a need for DB search:

  • T250887 – closed as resolved, but the need is still present, just not coordinated via Phabricator at this point
  • T257687#6661387 – helping itwiki with a LTA
  • T260485

There are other tasks as well, those just are the recent examples.

I discussed this rationale with @Ottomata, and he said this is an appropriate need.

WMF work

Recently, I started work for the Growth team as a part time software engineer. One of my tasks would be to create tools for mentors. We will use EventLogging to record impression, and it would be useful to be able to query impressions recorded by my features myself to answer questions about how the feature is used.

I will probably need kerberos principal as well.

SRE Clinic Duty Confirmation Checklist for Access Requests

This checklist should be used on all access requests to ensure that all steps are covered, including expansion to existing access. Please double check the step has been completed before checking it off.

This section is to be confirmed and completed by a member of the SRE team.

  • - User has signed the L3 Acknowledgement of Wikimedia Server Access Responsibilities Document.
  • - User has a valid NDA on file with WMF legal.  (This can be checked by Operations via the NDA tracking sheet & is included in all WMF Staff/Contractor hiring.)
  • - User has provided the following: wikitech username, preferred shell username, email address, and full reasoning for access (including what commands and/or tasks they expect to perform)
  • - User has provided a public SSH key.  This ssh key pair should only be used for WMF cluster access, and not share with any other service (this includes not sharing with WMCS access, no shared keys.)
  • - access request (or expansion) has sign off of WMF sponsor/manager (sponser for volunteers, manager for wmf staff)
  • - non-staff requests: 3 business day wait must pass with no objections being noted on the task
  • - Patchset for access request

For additional details regarding access request requirements, please see https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Requesting_shell_access
