Center point changes position when zooming in VisualEditor map dialog
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

The math behind the center handle (white square in the middle) is a little weird. This ist most obvious when I use the and + buttons to zoom in and out. The zoom target appears to be somewhere outside of the center handle, offset to the top or bottom of the handle. This effect is more extreme the more I am in the north or south of the globe.

Expected: When I place the handle at a specific position and zoom in or out, the handle's position doesn't change.

Event Timeline

The center point appears at the "geographical center" of the area, at exactly the coordinates given in the dialog. It looks off because of the stretching occurring when the globe is flattened into a map.

Oh, thanks for the quick response. I was not considering this. This does indeed make a lot of sense (and becomes much more obvious at the very top or bottom of the globe).

However, there is still something odd going on. When I place the center handle on a specific position and then press the + or buttons, the handle's position changes in an unexpected way.

Note how the handle is positioned in the middle of the water body in the first image. Press + one time. Now the handle is positioned at the top of the water body.

Here the handle is positioned in the middle of that peninsula. Press two times. Now the handle is placed way below the peninsula.

This effect is more extreme the more I move to the north or south.
