Request Administrator Access to Google Search Console
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

As per @dr0ptp4kt 's request, I'll handle administration of of our search consoles on various search engines and help Foundation staffers get access to these on a need basis, while tracking who has access and for what purposes.

To that end, could I please have administrator access to our Google Search Console?

FYI there is a separate ticket https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T302617 tracking the setup and domain verification for the other search engines (Bing, Yandex).

Event Timeline

Adding @JMeybohm who is (I believe) on clinic duty this week. Normally I don't do this but we are particularly interested on getting admin access for someone on the Web team ready so we can unblock the pending work at T302617. :-)

From the context of T302617 I derive that this is widely approved.

AIUI admin access basically means providing access to/handing out the shared account credentials we have in pwstore. Can somebody confirm that (cc @faidon)?

To answer the question on the creds, no, they don't need to be shared. But delegated access will need to be established. An SRE with access to the creds should be able to visit https://www.google.com/webmasters/verification/details?hl=en&domain=wikipedia.org and grant @SCherukuwada delegated access.

So this is just about access to the wikipedia.org domain? I did check the webmaster tools and it seemed to me that delegated access needs to be granted on a per domain basis (which is not what I interpreted as administrator access in first place).

@JMeybohm Given that we didn't actually add each language domain one by one, there should be, a "wikipedia.org" entry listed as a "Domain Property" along with all of the per-language Wikipedias on Search Console. When you select that one and add me as an "Owner" that should do it. There isn't an actual "Administrator" ACL level as far as I can tell - it's just "Owner", "Restricted", or "Full".

That's correct. I'll follow up under separate cover.

Hi all. Following up from email thread. The request here is for delegated owner access to be granted to @SCherukuwada's Google Workspace account via the following:

https://www.google.com/webmasters/verification/details?hl=en&domain=wikipedia.org
https://www.google.com/webmasters/verification/details?hl=en&domain=wikidata.org
https://www.google.com/webmasters/verification/details?hl=en&domain=mediawiki.org

That provides automatic access without a need for further grants for the second level domains and their subdomains. Generally, I want this list of users with this particular access constrained.

Regarding other second level domains (and possible subdomains of those) such as wiktionary.org, would you prefer I list them here or rather open a fresh task? Both Suman and I should have access to those. So while I'm happy to enumerate and approve them here for Suman, it may be easiest if we just do that separately so we can get this here task done and do the other one as a fast follower.

I added Suman to those 3 domains. Please let me know if it works as expected or if there are any issues.

I agree a different task would keep things cleaner.

Thanks!
