Description
The newcomer homepage funnels newcomers into editing articles, but currently does little to encourage newcomers to join Talk page discussions.
Recent community discussions highlight that often times maintenance templates are out-of-date and perhaps it would be beneficial to have newcomers add a topic to Talk pages when a suggested edit maintenance template is out of date.
Joining community discussions is also another way to further integrate newcomers into the wikis and possibly further engage them. This has some relation to the current Growth team Positive Reinforcement project and previous research related to Cataloguing and reviewing the efficacy of rewards and recognition in sustaining contributions.
Acceptance Criteria
- Evaluate the current newcomer Homepage and evaluate if we should make any improvements or additions to existing copy. Particularly looking at info text and the help text below the Suggested edits feed.
- Consider if there are any other higher effort ideas we should consider. Create a basic wireframe to help start initial discussions.
- This idea doesn't need to be pursued, but one example idea is: a community customizable module with easy to configure text (via Growth Configuration) for communities to highlight specific ideas or projects they think newcomers should know about, like the importance of Talk page discussions, resources for further involvement like Wikiprojects, Teahouse, etc.
