Wikisource misses very much the <ref> button in the toolbar
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Hello,
I noticed some time ago, that the button allowing to easily add <ref> tags to pages in the Page namespace to the text was removed from the common toolbar... (the one showing a book and bookmark - see https://fr.wikisource.org/wiki/Aide:Barre_d%E2%80%99outils#Barre_d%E2%80%99outils)

If I understand very well that Wikipedias do not really need it any more with the sourcing tools, it is a great loss to Wikisources, that used it to easily insert footnotes into the text of edited pages. In some 19th century books, there can be as many as 5 to 10 footnotes in a single page.

The disappearance of this button thus forces us to manually tag it in the text, with possible errors, of course. Even added to Edittools list, it means a double manipulation, to change the menu to access it. This can be such a nightmare on some books...

Is there any way we could recover this button that was so useful, in Wikisource, maybe through an option, a gadget, something ? Pretty pretty please...

I'm not sure if I'm seeing the issue here correctly. When I edit the page you link to above (or any other page on any Wikisource) it has a 'bookmark' icon which inserts <ref></ref>. Is this not what you're talking about? Or is it not working or not visible to you?

The problem is that button is not in the Page namespace - random example: https://en.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=Page:Stories_by_Foreign_Authors_(German_II).djvu/1&action=edit

That button is in the main and Author namespaces, though.

Oh yes! Sorry, I should've checked Page pages.

I wonder if this is related to the move of that button from WikiEditor (2010) to Cite. It looks like it's only showing on 'subject' pages.

The button was present on July 6 2023 and was gone on July 10 2023. Noticed on French Wikisource.

Yes, sorry :)

The disparition is in the Page: namespace, which is the main editing place (on frwikisource, at least). I never add refs in Author's page, and very rarely in Main.
