rev 12567 implements throwing a proper exception.
Still need to try and streamline swapping to the other protocol, but this should help prevent some of the errors such as T243709: ApiErrorException: API returned the following error: 'The login module requires a POST request' (when trying to use AWB on custom wiki), and all the duplicates...
