[Sub Epic] Edit Patrol V3
Open, LowPublic

Description

Background

In May 2024 the Android team released V2 of Edit Patrol, a suggested edit that allows users to review a feed of recent changes and patrol from their mobile device to all wikis. The main implementation was coordinated on this Epic: T322083.

  • V1 was the initial version that was rolled out to target wikis in October 2023
  • V2 included improvements to add Your Messages, Example Messages, and support for user talk warning templates.
  • V3 will include clean up tasks, requested improvements, and items were previously have been blocked.

Hypothesis & Assumptions

We believe that if there is an easier way for users to patrol tasks, and we can structure this in a way that it becomes an advanced-level task. We can give easier patrolling tasks (or a training task) to editors that are experienced, but do not have sysops or rollback rights and then uplevel them after reaching a threshold of initial patrolling activities. We believe to achieve this we must start with a proof of concept for general patrolling of edits based on users that have rollback rights. Finally, we assume that patrolling recent edits is desired as an initial priority and is more fitting for mobile than NPP, AFD, and AFC. Additionally, we assume there will be community consensus on a training task across languages.

User Stories
  • As a Wikipedia Android app user that has rollback rights, I want to easily fight vandalism while on the train and save my progress, so that I can maintain the quality of wikis while on the go.
  • As an accomplished experienced editor, I want to learn how to fight vandalism in a low stakes enviornment, so that I can earn admin privileges while still contributing in a way that enhances the quality of wikis, especially about topics that I am well informed about
  • As an admin on a smaller-language Wiki, I want to be able to block a vandal that I've warned multiple times using Edit Patrol, who is still creating damage.
Requirements

Must have

  • Integrated with community configuration T358265 (Blocked until release of Community Config 2.0)
  • Uses RevertRisk T356075 (Blocked until release of RevertRisk to RecentChanges)
  • Shows "Edit Patrol" entry point to all users, and if they do not have rollback rights rights, the entry point leads to their Wikipedia's page for requesting rollback rights

Nice to have

  • Add ability for admins to block users from the tool T363422, Requested by 1 community member, to be prioritized if we hear more requests for this functionality
  • Add secondary identifier for Saved Messages T360481, Requested by 1 community member, to be prioritized if we hear more requests for this functionality
  • A training task available to editors who have 50+ edits, where edits are not published.
    • Test edits are recorded and able to be shared with admins of that Wikipedia
