Thanks! Next steps: Apps team pick this up in January/February, and fix the bug using the new API.
- Best case scenario: we get this fixed before the Beta release of saved reading lists to all users, planned for February 2026.
- If we don't fix this before the beta release, iOS app users with Syncing turned on will have a slightly more buggy experience. We already have this problem from Android, we're just adding Web as another platform to contribute to the bug.
- The amount of iOS users affected depends on how wide the Beta release is, and how many logged-in users opt-in to beta and syncing.
One more learning from this:
The 5-day funnel check task T411886 was something new we added for Year in Review. It was really useful for this purpose of finding display bugs, and next year we should do it earlier, after 2 days.
@SNowick_WMF @GOlson-WMF if there are no downsides performance wise, and it doesn't cause additional engineering burden I would like to keep the event logging in place. Since we may decide to re-visit the recommendations with a future release, it makes sense to leave the instrumentation.

@ABorbaWMF could you try to reproduce?
Thanks for filing such a detailed task @Krinkle! We do already have face detection in place through Objective C but it is not perfect as you've shown in the examples. The most promising alternative to explore is T229534: iOS13 [Feature] - Look into new image saliency API for better cropping.
Thanks for filing this task, @ARamadan-WMF. Could you please let the user know:
@SChekfa-WMF could you please look at this? The header is still not looking correct in the intermediary stage.
Please mock up exactly what it should look like with the current release having "Your impact" & only the "Total edits" module
