Changing the url around (to avoid caching) I got the error "Error retrieving thumbnail from scaling server: empty response" (status code 500).

I also just randomly went through search, and first image i tried was also affected ( https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6d/Hungry_Ghosts_Scroll_Kyoto_5.tif/lossy-page1-320px-Hungry_Ghosts_Scroll_Kyoto_5.tif.jpg )

I'm raising priority, as this seems to be a significant issue affecting many image files, which used to work.

Fixed in r112613, r112616. Use ?action=purge on the File: page to clear existing broken files.
