I have a surprisingly difficult time checking the box - 99 times out of 100 when attempting, the photo details open up instead of checking the box. Perhaps I just have unusually large fingers.

Jon and I can confirm that it's not just your fingers. :)
If the checkbox itself can't be made to take up more space, an easy way to handle this might be to check the coordinates when we get the click event, and just treat the leftmost X pixels of the <li> as belonging to the checkbox, then trigger it.
