afaik, wmf dumps are done with python scripts and not the mediawiki maintenance scripts.

maybe do this just for the json dumps? or what?

also important are things like special:export and that folks access the serialization using lua. (e.g. list of properties pages)

Is this about the legacy WMF dumps which are raw page dumps (eg. just what's in the external storage db) or about the json dumps (which we don't yet have in production)?
