"ajax" as a tag would not replace T16123: [DO NOT USE] Make MediaWiki more AJAXy (tracking), which is about adding features into MediaWiki that use ajax instead of requiring complete reloads.
Factual note: The task's original name was "Ajax (tracking)" (note I'm actualy its creator, so I clearly remember that) and it was covering all tasks related to Ajax (aka also those with fixing / redoing existing Ajax features).
Because the Phabricator did not import the entire history of bugs from Bugzilla, it's quite hard now to find out, what was done when it was renamed.
I don't see a problem with creating tag Ajax to track all "Ajax" related stuff and goal eg. "More-Ajax" or "Add-Ajax" to cover adding of new features.
The name "AJAX" and the scope of T16123 about MediaWiki specifically plus introducing more AJAXy stuff don't match.
Proposing to decline this task and close T16123 instead. Most newer tasks in Phab I've seen about AJAX don't get any such tag because it's common to use AJAXy stuff nowadays so I miss a use case for such a tag anyway.
Also unassigning due to inactivity.
