Remove links to non-certified translations of WMF Privacy Policy
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Currently, there are only three certified versions of the WMF Privacy Policy: English, Italian, and Portuguese

Non-certified versions may contain errors, and people referring to them has created legal problems for WMF.

As a result, WMF Legal has requested that any footer links to non-certified translations be removed and pointed to the primary English version of the policy (which then has links to un-certified translations and a message that the English version is the official version).

Change 248254 had a related patch set uploaded (by Varnent):
Uniformity among non-certified translations of Privacy Policy per request from WMF Legal Dept

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/248254

The official translations were in Spanish, German (low), French, Arabic, and Japanese, and more recently Italian and Brazilian Portuguese.

Sorry - I wasn't told about Spanish, German, French, Arabic, and Japanese. Does the German being low mean it should not be linked to?

Those can all stay (assuming they haven't been vandalized), but there should still be a clear disclaimer stating: Please note that in the event of any differences in meaning or interpretation between the original English version of this Privacy Policy and a translation, the original English version takes precedence.

German (low) was meant to indicate that the translation was to low German as opposed to high German. It can be linked.

Excellent - thank you for the info - I'll go ahead and revise the submitted patch. :)

You're welcome. FYI - We plan on gradually adding more official translations over time and as budgets allow.

The latest patch reflects this discussion and these languages are included: Spanish, German (low), French, Arabic, Japanese, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese

the primary English version of the policy (which then has links to un-certified translations and a message that the English version is the official version)

Incorrect. The warning is present on all translations on Meta-Wiki, but NOT on https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_policy . Hence the translated versions are the most informative ones about the prevalence of the English text.

I was speaking about the ones on Meta-Wiki. However, we can add it to WMF Wiki.

@Mpaulson - any objections to adding that disclaimer to the version posted on WMF Wiki?

That said, I am not sure the disclaimer is really needed - as it is really meant for the translations themselves:
"This is a translation. For the official, binding version of this document, please see the English language original."

I suppose we could add this text to disclaimer on WMF Wiki:
"This English version is the official, binding version and supersedes any translated versions."

I was speaking about the ones on Meta-Wiki.

So why unlink them?
