Investigate how users should interact with the Commons-Mover-Tool
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Our investigations have shown so far that the best way to fulfill the wish[1] is to create an extension that allows users to move files to Commons. The extension itself would live in the Commons domain, but users might probably want to interact with it from their starting point (e.g. Wikipedia).

Questions:

  • When do users decide that they want to move something to Commons?
  • Where would they be / go to (e.g. which page type in Wikipedia, or other projects)
  • What exactly do users want to do then and how?

Out of the answers to these questions we then need to develop a mock how the new functionality looks like for the user.

[1] The wish is a technically correct transfer of files from Wikipedia to Commons (see parent task)

Event Timeline

When do users decide that they want to move something to Commons?

If a freely licensed file is hosted on de.wikipedia.org, it isn't possible to use it at fr.wikipedia.org. It must be moved to Wikimedia Commons (the global image repository). Files hosted on Wikimeda Commons can be used on all Wikimedia Projects and external sites which are using InstantCommons

Where would they be / go to (e.g. which page type in Wikipedia, or other projects)

IMHO there should be a button on the filedescription page,.

What exactly do users want to do then and how?

Q1

From an interview with a German wikipedia admin:

When do users decide that they want to move something to Commons?

Usually he writes a new article and then needs photos to complement it. There are two ways:

  • a) He goes to another language wiki article and finds a suitable photo with the right licence there, but which is not yet on Commons. This often happens to him in en-wiki.
  • b) He uses the google search, defines that it should only show him images that may be reused and edited, and looks for a suitable picture there. Most of the time this also leads him to photos on Commons, wikipedia or flickr.

He then uses the CommonsHelper tool that is linked in the "More" menu in the upper bar to move the file to Commons if it is not there yet and has the appropriate licence.

Other interesting information:
Last month, he moved three images, but he guesses that usually he does not move more than 10 files a year.
On the Spanish wikipedia, you cannot upload any images to wikipedia anymore, they all have to go to Commons. On the German wikipedia most images seem to be deliberately not uploaded to Commons, whereas on the English wikipedia it happens more often that files are on Wikipedia that would fit better to Commons

From an interview with yet another German wikipedia long-term editor

When do users decide that they want to move something to Commons?

There are three use cases for this editor to move something to Commons:

  • He wants to reuse a photo from one language wikipedia in another language wikipedia
  • He has some js code running that automatically highlights all images on Wikipedia which are not on Commons. Those images then have a red border around them
  • He sometimes uses FIST (Free image search tool), which looks for free images e.g. on Wikipedia, Flickr, and sometimes points him to images that have not been uploaded to Commons but should be

Where would they be / go to (e.g. which page type in Wikipedia, or other projects)?

Usually, he would click on the image and thus reach the local file page. He would like to move the file from there, e.g. having a "Move to Commons" link in the tab-bar on top (which would probably automatically be sorted to the "More" tab)

Lea_WMDE claimed this task.

The current idea is to have a "Move to Commons" link next to version history on the wikipedia file page, if the licence allows to do so.
