There is some regularity for ealier versions: the history page shows that every 20th version is accessible (exactly 19 versions lost between accessible ones).
And this regularity looks strange: was there some database partition between 20 database files or so? (And 19 of them being lost?)

As I noted on the community wishlist page, IA has a dump from December 23, 2004. I think it may be our best bet for the majority of these revisions.

The page was probably moved shortly before the deletion. The check for compressed revisions was done on the slave DB server using old_namespace/old_title, so it may well have been lagged, with the affected rows still having the old namespace/title combination in the slave. So the deletion was allowed, putting it on a path to eventual irreversible corruption.

In mid-2005 we upgraded the Wikimedia sites to MediaWiki 1.5, which uses a very different database layout than earlier versions. SQL dumps of the 'cur' and 'old' tables are no longer available because those tables no longer exist.
We don't provide direct dumps of the new 'page', 'revision', and 'text' tables either because aggressive changes to the backend storage make this extra difficult: much data is in fact indirection pointing to another database cluster, and deleted pages which we cannot reproduce may still be present in the raw internal database blobs. The XML dump format provides forward and backward compatibility without requiring authors of third-party dump processing or statistics tools to reproduce our every internal hack.
If required, you can use the mwdumper tool (see below) to produce SQL statements compatible with the version 1.4 schema from an XML dump.

http://web.archive.org/web/20050123094156/http://download.wikimedia.org:80/ shows that more recent cur/old SQL dumps than the 2004 one were created, which, if they still existed, would contain the revisions. But I did a quick search of the internet archive and couldn't find any trace of them - it's believable that nobody believed in mirroring gigabytes of old dumps at the time - the 2004 dump there probably survived because it was created immediately before Wikipedia upgraded to 1.4.

Okay, that took longer than I expected. I decided it was easier to parse the SQL dump myself with a Python script rather than importing gigabytes of content into an actual MySQL database and setting up an old version of MediaWiki around it. Nevertheless, I present:

This includes all of the revisions in the 2004 dump, including the ones that survive in the present database. I checked that the content matched, and it did after converting both sides to Unix line endings. I also checked that the usernames and such match, and they did except for user renames that happened since 2004 and one case where an edit was misattributed to User:0 in the 2004 dump but the user ID was preserved so it is fixed in the modern database. (The XML file itself was created by starting with an export from the modern-day database and then replacing the text where it was absent, so it uses modern usernames)

I don't think I could have done this if I hadn't just worked on T387188 which involved many of the same bits (refilling XML, decompressing, windows-1252, etc.)

Wow, thanks very much! I've imported that XML in to the current database. I didn't worry about keeping around the old edits in this case; too much work for not very much gain. The missing history now appears like this, which is a lot better than before!

This task should not remain open with no projects - it should either be closed as resolved, or left open to track the late 2004 and early 2005 edits that are still missing.
