Create method for users to reset their search preferences back to default
Open, LowPublic

Description

Use-case:
As a user, who has previously selected the checkbox "Remember selection for future searches" in the "Advanced" tab at Special:Search - it is now impossible for me to reset my preferences, so that future searches take me to the (default) "Content" tab.

Desired outcome:
Either...

  1. a new link in the "Advanced" tab (next to the "remember selection" checkbox) to "Reset search preferences to default"
  2. a new documented URL parameter that editors could add (e.g. ?searchprefsreset=1) that will enable the functionality but without adding to the UI's complexity

Keywords (for future phab searches): mw-search-powersearch-remember, profile=default, settings, prefs

This request initially inspired by an editor's frustration with the mobile Advanced search interface dominating his screen: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Topic:Ttvfwpdhg8di4la5 (but I believe it's a more widespread frustration. I've personally tried to reset my search prefs back to just "mainspace", in the past, and been unable to do so)

Indeed if you are not logged in the namespace selection box is not shown. However if you are logged in the namespace selection box is shown even if you did not check "Remember selection for future search" checkbox, at least that's the case on REL1_27.

debt moved this task from needs triage to This Quarter on the Discovery-Search board.
debt added subscribers: Jdrewniak, debt.

We can add in a button to clear out the user preferences for search to remove the saved search criteria.

Maybe @Jdrewniak can take a look at updating this in MediaWiki. :)

debt added a project: Discovery-ARCHIVED.

@Jdrewniak will take a look to determine the effort associated with this work.

Closing out low/est priority tasks over 6 months old with no activity within last 6 months in order to clean out the backlog of tickets we will not be addressing in the near term. Please feel free to reopen if you think a ticket is important, but bare in mind that given current priorities and resourcing, it is unlikely for the Search team to pick up these tasks for the indefinite future. We hope that the requested changes have either been addressed by or made irrelevant by work the team has done or is doing -- e.g. upgrading Elasticsearch to a newer version will solve various ES-related problems -- or will be subsumed by future work in a more generalized way.

Re-opening tasks and removing from team workboard per IRC feedback given yesterday and discussion with MPham.
