deploy Cognate to als, bar and pfl Wikipedia Word namespace
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

The "Wort" or "Woat" namespaces should be linked to main namespaces in other Wiktionaries.

These language wiktionaries have been closed and their words are actually on the wikipedia projects.

Event Timeline

Looking at the description I am guessing this means Wiktionaries and no Wikipedias as in the title.

Do these wiktionaries use a namespace to store their words? compared to most others using the main namespace?

For example https://als.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wort:Houptsyte is the main page of Alemannic Wiktionary. (The actual Alemannic Wiktionary was merged with Wikipedia and closed, and is proposed for deletion)
And https://als.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wort:Haus is an entry for the term "Haus"

Okay, I think @Lydia_Pintscher and @Lea_Lacroix_WMDE need to decide on the priority of this.

Looking at the content of those three (https://als.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spezial:Alli_Syte?from=&to=&namespace=104, https://pfl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schbezial:Alle_Seiten?from=&to=&namespace=104 and https://bar.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spezial:Alle_Seiten?from=&to=&namespace=104), I'm not sure how well this would work:

It seems that those namespaces aren't restricted to words where Cognate would be useful, they also contain all the other non-category pages like the main page, lists and templates (which should use normal Wikidata items, not Cognate).

There's also no case distinction for the first letter of the page names. There aren't many pages and most of the current ones appear to be nouns which would normally be capitalised, but there are examples which look like they should be lowercase, e.g. https://pfl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wort:W%C3%BCrgen contains a link to https://de.wiktionary.org/wiki/w%C3%BCrgen and https://als.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wort:Cheibe says it's an adverb and gives example sentences where it is lowercase.

You can enable Cognate there without excluding them from ordinary Wikidata links. For the case issue, the best approach is to set $wgCapitalLinkOverrides in these wiki, and manually fix remaining case issue (there're not too many to fix).

Thank you @Nikki for the links. That's super useful. Looking at those lists it seems like it is a super small problem and I'd rather not have us spend time on it at this point while we have much bigger fish to fry.
