Measuring TemplateWizard's impact on template usage
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

This ticket is to measure what impact, if any, TemplateWizard has on template and TemplateData usage on wikis. I don't expect any immediate change but it would be interesting to see if there's any uptick in the long term (4-6 months).

One wiki I am planning to do targeted outreach on is Hindi wikipedia as an experiment to see if doing that drives up template and TemplateData usage.

@nettrom_WMF I'd like your input and guidance on this ticket.

I looked into the TemplateData API, and its data is stored in the page_props table (with pp_propname = 'templatedata'). This makes it relatively straightforward to identify if a template has data stored, but we cannot determine when it was added without going through the revision history.

It might be possible to set up a daily cron job to get the number of template pages, as well as the number of those that that have TemplateData defined, so we can track this over time (similarly as to what we did for page creations for ACTRIAL).

@nettrom_WMF I haven't yet heard back from any of the users about this so I'll let you know which wikis we would want to gather this data on.
In addition to template usage and TemplateData usage, can we also track number of templates transcluded in a given time period or collect that data for future (with a cron job or such)?

Calculating the number of transclusions, either overall or in a certain namespace (e.g. number of transclusions in the article namespace) is straightforward. It's difficult to calculate this over a specific time period because of the lack of versioning (as mentioned above), but easy to understand changes over time if we run daily snapshots.

Does Community Tech already have some data gathering set up, e.g. a daily ReportUpdater cron job that I can write queries for?

Lastly, I've done some work into looking at what features the Scandinavian Wikipedias have in their 2010 editor, should be able to complete that this week. Looks like at least Norwegian Bokmål has some template buttons, but they're limited to a standard set, meaning that the TemplateWizard could be a worthwhile addition there.

Completed looking into the features of the 2010 editor by also looking at the Norwegian Nynorsk, Swedish, and Danish Wikipedias. Neither of these have any buttons for templates in the editor, unlike what I found in the Norwegian Bokmål edition. Some of them have added some often-used template shortcuts by text below the editor's input window.
