Native spelling of Pali on www.wikipedia.org is wrong
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

According to @Foreverknowledge on the enwp Teahouse, the native spelling of "Pali" is wrong on www.wikipedia.org. According to them "the native name for the Pali language can be spelled पालि (more common) or पाळि (less common) but the current spelling listed on the main page is पाऴि (with a dot below ळ) and that is simply wrong." That first spelling matches with the spelling on the Pali article (and it's the same on the pi.wikipedia article, and I assume that they've spelled the name of their language correctly on their own wikipedia).

This should probably be fixed in l10n/pi.json.

This should be updated on translatewiki, it will then be exported and go live within a week or so

For anyone willing, the string that needs updating on translatewiki is this one:

The translatewiki page was originally created a bot in 2016, and hasn't changed since then. I have changed the translation to "पालि" (diff). The change should propagate to gerrit soon.

Thank you all for taking the initiative to correct the spelling. When do you expect the spelling to be updated to "पालि"? It's currently still showing the spelling as "पाऴि" as you can see here: https://www.wikipedia.org/

@Foreverknowledge soon - gerrit appears to be updated around once every week to two weeks

Hi. Could there be a problem with gerrit? It's been more than 3 weeks now and the spelling has still not been updated to "पालि".

No idea - I'm going to tag translatewiki, in the hopes that someone can take a look. Sorry about this

The language does not meet the default export threshold (25%).

@Jdrewniak Should we remove the export threshold for this repository?

@Nikerabbit yeah, that sounds like a good idea :)

Change 508988 had a related patch set uploaded (by Nikerabbit; owner: Nikerabbit):
[translatewiki@master] Reduce export threshold of wikimedia-portals to minimum

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/508988

Change 508988 merged by jenkins-bot:

There will be an export later today.

So with the export what does that mean exactly as far as updating the spelling to "पालि" on the Wikipedia page? What is the time estimate for the process to be completed with the updated spelling?

@Foreverknowledge it should be updated now

@DannyS712 It hasn't been updated yet. If you go to https://www.wikipedia.org/ and scroll down to the 1000+ articles section, the language name is still spelled "पाऴि" when it should be "पालि".

Probably on Monday when someone triggers the deploy build, and then deploys it (they have a weekly Monday deploy window as long as it’s not a WMF holiday)
