KaiOS Wikipedia App: Create documentation and allow contributions
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Hi everyone! Thanks for working on this app.

I'll pretend to be a volunteer who is interested in contributing code to the KaiOS-Wikipedia-app:

Please provide documentation and make this project discoverable, in order to allow collaboration. WMF's obligation is not just to share code, but to cultivate a healthy community of contributors around the source code. For example, it seems that actual instructions how to build and how to run this code base do exist, but unfortunately in non-discoverable places.

Thanks a lot in advance!

(PS: Reading about the WMF Inuka Team and its focus, I'm also wondering if there are projects which could be promoted in WMF's Outreach Programs? They focus on underrepresented groups in tech and have a pretty global representation.)

Event Timeline

Hi @Aklapper. thanks for filling this. You included good places where we'll have to document our work.

Part of this is in progress in T245564 but I would like to ask for your patience. For a few different reasons (challenges of KaiOS, new team, product is still very experimental), we would be able to accept external contributors but I don't really want to encourage it at this time. I want to think about this more after the first successful launch.

@SBisson: Thanks! I understand that this is not a good project to contribute to (yet). However, I could not have found out without your comment in this task, so isn't that worth to document? :) It would be great if you allowed me to find out about this project (also in case someone tried to reinvent this wheel), find out that it currently does not make much sense yet to contribute, and if I was still interested to take a sneak preview how I could build / run that project. Do you agree?

@SBisson: Hi, do you agree? (I'm also happy to help setting up basic documentation if your team prioritizes other things.)

@Aklapper yes I agree. We're working hard to have our first release asap. We have this page now: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikipedia_for_KaiOS and we've improved the README in the repo.

We certainly welcome your help to fill the documentation gaps.

mw:Wikimedia Apps now links to mw:Wikipedia for KaiOS. Please update that link if the page is moved.

Putting this on our radar.

We want clear documentation to help volunteers understand how they can work with us and contribute to this app. On mw.org and/or github. More details to come.
