VE deletes comments in references with ISBN numbers
Open, LowPublicBUG REPORT

Description

As reported in https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Technik/Text/Edit/VisualEditor/R%C3%BCckmeldungen#Kommentare_wurden_ungewollt_entfernt :

Under certain, very specific circumstances VE automatically removes HTML comments from wikitext in references:
https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Grombach_(Walzbach)&diff=prev&oldid=197381633
https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pfinz&diff=191962499&oldid=191895202

After many tests we were able to reproduce the problem:
https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Benutzer%3ATkarcher%2FSpielwiese&type=revision&diff=197696937&oldid=197696916

It only occurs when

  1. VE is used (no problem in NWE or any other editor),
  2. there's "untidy" HTML code like redundant white spaces to be cleaned up, and
  3. there's an ISBN number included.

I don't even see the comment, or any placeholder for it, in the Parsoid HTML: https://de.wikipedia.org/api/rest_v1/page/html/Benutzer%3ATkarcher%2FSpielwiese/197696916

This probably means that whenever the references are changed in any way, the comment will be lost.
