Under certain, very specific circumstances VE automatically removes HTML comments from wikitext in references:

After many tests we were able to reproduce the problem:

It only occurs when

VE is used (no problem in NWE or any other editor),
there's "untidy" HTML code like redundant white spaces to be cleaned up, and
there's an ISBN number included.

I don't even see the comment, or any placeholder for it, in the Parsoid HTML: https://de.wikipedia.org/api/rest_v1/page/html/Benutzer%3ATkarcher%2FSpielwiese/197696916

This probably means that whenever the references are changed in any way, the comment will be lost.
