Install the FormWizard gadget on Commons
Open, Stalled, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Hi

Please can we have FormWizard installed on Commons?

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta:FormWizard

Its a WMF maintained gadget already installed on several Wikimedia projects including English Wikipedia and Wikidata. I'd like to use it for documentation I'm working on for Structured Data on Commons and I'm sure it could be used to simplify some processes using templates.

Thanks

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:FormWizard isn't actually installed on any Wikimedia wikis, and it's not WMF maintained. If you actually want that enabling, it needs to go through various pre-deployment processes; see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Writing_an_extension_for_deployment

If you want the version that's on other wikis, it's just a gadget and just needs doing onwiki: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta:FormWizard#Installing_the_FormWizard

Hi @Reedy that page is wrong, its already installed on the following Wikimedia projects including being used by WMF for all their grant application forms:

  • en.wikipedia.org
  • wikidata.org
  • no.wikimedia.org
  • meta.wikimedia.org (for WMF grants)
  • test.wikipedia.org

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta:FormWizard

I was the person who requested it was added to enwiki and Wikidata and have been using it for a year or two to make things.

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:I_JethroBT_(WMF) is the WMF staff member maintainer, I can't find him on Phabricator for some reason. @Harej or @Eugene233 might know more?

Thanks

The FormWizard extension is not deployed on any production wikis - it is not listed in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/diffusion/MREL/browse/master/make-release/settings.yaml or https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/source/mediawiki-config/browse/master/wmf-config/extension-list
Maybe the gadget is deployed on the wikis that you listed.
See https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Writing_an_extension_for_deployment for required steps to get an extension deployed on production wikis which has not been deployed before.

And if it was installed as an extension, it would also be listed on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Version etc

As per https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta:FormWizard that you linked, it explicitly and clearly says it's a gadget in the first sentence of the page.

FormWizard is a gadget that provides a structured, step-by-step workflow for creating a new wiki-page and populating it with content.

Thanks, I'm sorry I used the word extension instead of gadget, I was aware there was a difference (I'm not a programmer). I guess part of the confusion is that there is a gadget and an extension called the same thing. I've corrected the ticket name. Is it possible to install the gadget?

Thank you for the clarification, to be clear I want the gadget that's already available on en.wiki, wikidata etc to be available on Commons.

If you want the version that's on other wikis, it's just a gadget and just needs doing onwiki: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta:FormWizard#Installing_the_FormWizard

Should just need a on-wiki admin/interface admin. Doesn't need a Phab request to do it.

Thanks, I was told on Commons to ask on Phabricator.... https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump/Proposals#Please_can_we_install_the_FormWizard_extension_on_Commons

I've made a request on the admin notice board here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Administrators%27_noticeboard#Please_can_we_install_the_FormWizard_gadget_on_Commons

The admin notice board probably works, or https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump/Technical

I imagine you don't need much of any "consensus", unless you want to default enable the gadget for all users

I'm afraid this needs to be brought up on Commons instead. See also https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Gadget_kitchen
I have no idea what that Commons project tag in Phabricator is [not] used for.
