English language name "Pidgin" for code "wes" is ambiguous (LocalNamesEn)
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

wes was added to LocalNamesEn.php with "Pidgin" as the name. There are lots of pidgins though (see Wikipedia), so it's not clear what "Pidgin" refers to.

The original request (T263946) used "Pidgin (Cameroon)", ISO 639-3 and Glottolog use "Cameroon Pidgin" and the English Wikipedia uses "Cameroonian Pidgin English". The name should be one of those instead.

seems to be an oversight .. @Mbch331

@Mbch331 if you have a moment, would you patch this? Alternatively, I would have to ask WMDE. It's a potentially problematic ambiguity.

@Lydia_Pintscher can WMDE pick this up? It's a fix to something that previously slipped through the checks.

Change 720461 had a related patch set uploaded (by Mbch331; author: Mbch331):

[mediawiki/extensions/cldr@master] Change language name for language code wes

@Esc3300 LocalNamesEn.php is part of CLDR. That's not a WMDE extension.
The corresponding change was approved by @Raymond and not WMDE

From T263946 it looks like it followed the usual process for new codes for Wikidata. Also it was tested/marked as resolved by WMDE staff.

They only did the wikibase part. The CLDR patch isn't visible in that ticket due to faulty way of providing the bug ID in the patch commit message.

I don't want to dig on this further. Thanks for having it fixed.

@Nikki What is the autonym for this language? Because I need to know this to add the language to InitialiseSettings.php (see T277836)

I don't know. This ticket was about fixing the English name, the code itself was requested by @Eugene233 in T263946.

Since that ticket calls it "Pidgin (Cameroon)", it's probably fine to use that. It can always be changed later. The autonyms are not supposed to be used anywhere in the Wikidata interface anyway.
