Cloud VPS "signwriting" project Stretch deprecation
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

The end of life of Debian Stretch is approaching in 2022 and we need to move to Debian Bullseye (or Buster) before that date.

All instances in the signwriting project need to upgrade as soon as possible. Instances not upgraded by 2022-05-01 may be subject to deletion unless prior arrangements for an extended deadline has been approved by the Cloud VPS administration team.

It would be better if they weren't deleted, but it's not something I have time to upgrade. This will take down the sign language wikipedias on incubator. Sad but true.

@Slevinski is it possible to send out a request on the mailing lists(wikitech-l or cloud list) asking for a co-maintainer for this project? We will very much like to keep this project.

That would be great. Both of these servers should be easy to port. The www directory needs to be copied over. For dependencies, it should need the GD graphics library and maybe sqlite. It's been a few year since I ported the servers.

@Slevinski have you had any luck getting a co-maintainer or anyone showing interest?

I'm sorry I misunderstood. I thought you would try to find someone. I'd be happy to answer questions, but I no longer have time to participate in Wikimedia project.

@Slevinski: Hi, could you send an email to wikitech-l and cloud mailing lists to ask if someone is interested in becoming maintainer, and elaborate what's needed? Thanks!

If it's not much of a problem I would love to help run the upgrade. But this is purely just for upgrading this in an attempt to help keep it alive a bit more longer until a suitable maintainer is found. I won't become a maintainer because I'd need to dive into php and a whole lot of other stuffs, and I am not willing to learn those just for the purpose of maintaining this specific project.

HI @Slevinski okay I am the one who has been responding to your email hello @Raymond_Ndibe nice to see you again we meet in the Kwara Hackathon..I dropped it in the African Wikimedia whatsapp group a couple of folks interested too.
We actually have a hackathon coming up on Saturday and Sunday could it be added to the tasks?

@Zend2020 nice seeing you here. Yeah, I think this can been added to the hackathon tasks. I noticed someone in the group volunteered to do this. I believe @Slevinski will be happy to have that done.

@komla That will be nice too, any which way works for me though I really feel there is no need to add to hackathon if it is done already.

Not sure what happened, but this was never completed. A professor in Brazil is starting a class where the students will post Brazilian Sign Language wikipedia articles on Incubator. The stretch purge is getting serious. This needs to be done.

I've lost my 2fa for user "slevinski" so I can't log in yet. This page says to contact the Cloud Services Team, but doesn't say how. What's the best way to contact the Cloud Services Team to turn off 2fa for "slevinski" so I can reset?

This page says to contact the Cloud Services Team, but doesn't say how.

@Slevinski: Valid point. :) I've edited that page to link to https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Password_and_2FA_reset

@Aklapper Thanks! I'll try to work through this again. It's been several years and several computers ago.

The debian stretch servers have been rebuilt and deleted. This issue can be closed.
