Rename Phabricator project PageCuration to PageTriage?
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

PageTriage is the name of the MediaWiki extension, so seems like a more natural name than PageCuration. The gerrit repository and the MediaWiki page use this name.

What exactly is Page Curation anyway? Just the toolbar component of PageTriage? The name of the 2018 project undertaken by @MMiller_WMF and the Growth Team?

Some things to watch out for when doing the rename

  • Would be great if we could get some kind of redirect when people type the old tag PageCuration to now point at PageTriage
  • Would be great if we can keep the PageCuration tickets, workboard, members, watchers, etc.

I'm just tagging this PageCuration for now. Let me make sure I have consensus, then I will add the appropriate additional tags.

The 2011 New Page Patrol (NPP) system development page at MediaWiki is called Page Curation, and in its early stage the project was code-named Page Triage. It deals with the development of both the new feed and the Curation Tool.

On the other hand, on MediaWiki, the page at Extension:PageTriage appears to deal only with the development of what we often refer to as the Curation Tool i.e. the vertical toolbar and its fly-out panels.

The confusion with the names arises from different names used on en.Wiki and those used by the WMF and Phab. It's further exacerbated by the frequent changes and/or overlapping of WMF departments, their staff and managers. Hence the Wikipedia volunteers are often guilty of addressing their concerns to the wrong people or referring to the issues by least appropriate names.

Perhaps @kaldari who I believe is the is the only remaining member of the original team, and @MMiller_WMF who led the 2018 upgrade can lend their ideas for a more permanent name under which all the relevant Phab tickets can be grouped.

I personally think PageTriage is the best name to use on Phab. The en.Wiki community will always broadly refer to it as NPP.

In Phab, #PageCuration has the alternative hashtag #pagetriage. So in the end this should not matter. Does it create a problem currently? If so, how?

I find it unintuitive that we are doing wfLoadExtension( 'PageTriage' ); but we're tagging it on Phabricator as PageCuration. A minor thing, but in the long run would be nice to head back towards what the extension is called in the code, if there is consensus. I pause for other opinions.

I see. I've renamed it on Phab
