Define scenario(s) when Edit Check will automatically add a citation needed template on behalf of people who decline to add a source
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

T329593 prompts people who decline to accompany the new content they're adding with source with an opportunity to articulate why they made this choice so that people who end up reviewing this edit can decide what – if any – action to take in response. [i]

This task involves the work of building on the above by defining the scenario(s) when Edit Check will automatically add a citation needed template on behalf of people who decline to ad a source.

Stories

  • As experienced volunteers who agree there are types of new information that newcomers attempt to add that warrant being included within Wikipedia, even without a source, I want there to be a way for these newcomers to make the need for a source known to: A) increase the likelihood that some future volunteers will add a source to this unsourced statement and B) make readers aware that the particular piece of information they are reading has not yet been substantiated by a reliable source.

i. Where "actions to take in response" in this context means things like: revert the edit, post a message on the person who made the edit's talk page, etc.)

Note: the need for this audit emerged in the 3 March 2023 Editing Team Community Conversation.

ppelberg created this task.

I had the same idea.
I hope this will result in more edits getting references, than being reverted.
