I'm removing myself as assignee. I have worked on this a bit but don't realistically have the capacity to continue pulling the cart here and want to give the floor for others to accomplish great things! It's a valuable thing to work on, as it will make images and data on Wikimedia Commons so much more usable to the world at large.

The task may also become easier with the help of Generative AI. The latter should not take over the decisionmaking process but it will help with the thinking and breaking down in subtasks.

Does anyone know about the current status for this?

While this is SDC, it may also be of interest to Wikidata-WikiProject-Ontology as Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons data models should be well aligned.

@Abbe98 also expressed interest in this, and making progress here may be very useful during the 2026 NW Europe hackathon.

One example of an issue still to solve: how to deal with the "institution" part in the data model and templates.
