Discuss and agree on an SDC data modeling convention for the case where a Commons file depicts a specimen (animal, plant)...
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

We haven't yet fully figured out yet, nor agreed, on data modeling for those cases where a Commons file shows a specimen. Basically, an SDC variant of the Template:Specimen Wikitext template.

In some cases, the specimen will be held in a cultural institution and will hence also be a collections item with corresponding metadata - think collection info, inventory number...

Let's talk about proposals and agree upon a solution for this, which can then also be used as a template / best practice in upload tools, and can be used for the creation of simplified/minimal Lua-driven SDC-powered infobox templates (in particular Lua-fication of Template:Specimen).

Event Timeline

I'm removing myself as assignee. I automatically assigned myself when creating this task but it's really one for community contribution! It's a valuable thing to work on, as it will make biodiversity data on Wikimedia Commons so much more usable to the world at large.

The task may also become easier with the help of Generative AI. The latter should not take over the decisionmaking process but it will help with the thinking and breaking down in subtasks.

@TiagoLubiana as the WiR of the Biodiversity Heritage Library you may actually be able to give input on progress on this. Also I'm generally tagging WikiProject-Biodiversity to give a fresh nudge :-)

While this is SDC, it may also be of interest to Wikidata-WikiProject-Ontology as Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons data models should be well aligned.
