Host second Growth Team Community Meeting: Spanish Wikipedia
Open, MediumPublic

Description

User story & summary:

As a Product Manager, I want to engage with community members in several different ways, so that I can ensure we are hearing from a variety of wikis and voices.

Background:

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Growth/Communities/Conversations

Topic: Mentorship (and community organizers)

Time of second meeting: TBD ~ February 2024

Retro from first meeting:
  • clearly identify the target language and group
  • keep the topic narrow & clearly identify what the meeting is for (informational or discussion / feedback)
  • proactively invite community members who may be interested
  • we may want to limit the duration of the meeting (90 minutes might be too long)
Acceptance Criteria:
  • Agree on date and time
  • Update https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Growth/Communities/Conversations
  • Set agenda + work on presentation if needed
  • Work with Ambassadors to publicize & invite community members
  • Book interpretation service
  • Host meeting and help facilitate discussion
  • Share summary / notes on wiki after the meeting

Event Timeline

KStoller-WMF reassigned this task from Trizek to Trizek-WMF.
KStoller-WMF added a subscriber: Trizek.
KStoller-WMF moved this task from Backlog to Up Next on the Growth-Team board.

I had a quick call with @Zapipedia-WMF to get some advice.

Topic

  • The main topic should be to Engage with mentors. All other Growth topics ensue.
    • Take the opportunity to create a community of mentors for this wiki.
    • Community organizers are a good audience too, but with a focus on mentorship first, we will reach some of them. We can set another meeting specific to community organizers.
  • There are multiple ways to help newcomers at Spanish Wikipedia. The goal is to show the results of the current mentorship so that user would consider it (what we learned, what mentors appreciate, and what are the next steps).
  • It could be useful to ask for what they need to feel more comfortable being mentors. And what we can offer.
  • It could be beneficial to ask them their questions and ideas in advance so that we can prepare for the meeting. People who can't attend will be able to watch the recording and see their questions being answered.
  • Spare time for discussions; presentation/intro should be short.

Time and date

  • check on the best time frames for LATAM people to join; I will ask several colleagues in my team for the time.
  • on the week of Feb 26.
  • pick a good time for everyone, including Spain as most mentors are there.

Moving this out of the current sprint since @Trizek-WMF has some non-Growth team priorities requiring immediate attention.
