Propose MinT as the default over proprietary services where community feedback on quality does not indicate otherwise
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Content Translation integrates several machine translation services. While open services such as Apertium have been favoured over proprietary ones when choosing the initial defaults, MinT has been enabled mainly as an optional service in its initial stage.

When MinT was introduced it was not made the default over other well-established services immediately to avoid regressions for existing users. As MinT quality improves, we want to offer it as the default option for more languages. That is, expose to users an open source service by default, while still allowing users to switch to other services if they prefer them.

This is an Epic ticket to compile sets of languages where MinT can become the default. Check the sub-tasks for the full list.User feedback and data will determine whether the change was useful and whether to revert it until future improvements of MinT or apply it to more languages in the future.

MinT has become the default for different sets of languages (T353136, T353145, T353259). Future re-runs of the MT Usage analysis (T338606) will determine whether further adjustments may be needed.
