We seem to mix calling them codes and tokens too...
Does codes make more sense than tokens?
Codes is likely technically less correct but "tokens" is a term whose usage I still have not fully understood after all those years (too many meanings when not being a native speaker)
I suspect it's the idea of "scratch cards" (lottery or gift cards etc)... Where you scratch/use them once, and that's it. It's definitely not obvious though.
