Misleading payment error messages cause supporters to be double/triple charged
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

A small group (~20) donors wrote in to share they had experienced a "payment failed" error on Adyen during their donate flow. This was despite their donations actually going through - and in some cases this confusion caused them to make multiple donations unintentionally.

These donations are held up as authorized in Adyen but ultimately settle - what causes these error messages to appear?

*Potentially Related to {T323541} - *

Not an urgent priority due to volume, but worthy of research to see if we can gather more examples. Potential interventions could also be:

  • reducing # of txns that may be settled to <4
  • improving the messaging supporters see so they don't immediately retry

Event Timeline

Hi @MBeat33 - could you offer potential suggestions to the error message wording (e.g. your transaction is pending)...

thank you for this Task @AKanji-WMF

  1. Your donation is pending. If you do not see the Thank You page in [time auto settler generally takes] please contact donate@wikimedia.org
  2. Please wait while your donation processes.

If we reduce the # that may be settled to 2 that might mitigate the need for new messaging?

Thanks @AKanji-WMF for this task and @MBeat33

Adding some context / background that might be helpful:

Donors whose donation is held up at 'authorized' see an error message, and in many cases the autosettler will then push the donation through. This is known behaviour, but the issue is that the error messaging is the same as that used when donations completely fail, and the donor has no way of knowing that the donation may in fact process. We saw around 20 cases of donors attempting multiple times as a result, and up to 4 of those donations ultimately being settled (related: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T323541).

We would therefore like to either change the language in the messaging the donor sees when a donation is held up as authorized (but could ultimately process), or reduce the number of donations settled from 4 to 2. Or -ideally- both!

RE. your first idea @MBeat33 - these donors don't see the TY page (or get the cookie!), but will get the receipt, although it may take a day or two. Perhaps we need to ask them to reach out to Donor Relations at donate@ and discourage them from reattempting.
