"Hello,
I am a long time user of Wikipedia and have been using the iOS app for a few years now. I really enjoy it and it’s one of my most used apps.
My email is regarding a suggestion for a feature. Specifically, I would like to see a feature where users can mark if they have previously read an article. This feature would be a self-regulated one where users consciously have to mark “read” in some way, similar to the “save article” feature. Due to the nature of articles endlessly evolving, it may seem like there could be a problem with marking an article as “read”. To address this problem, I would suggest that when viewing an article that a user previously marked as “read” they would at a glance be able to see what edits have been made to the article since it having been marked as such. When viewing what edits have been made, the user should be able to click on each edit that stands and be taken to that section. This way, users can read newly added information without rereading the entire article. Additionally, a user should have the choice to revalidate that they’ve read the article with the edits made and the process begins again until they open that article. It likely goes without saying but there should be a category of “read” articles for easy reference and when viewing this category in list view, a number noting the amount of edits should appear next to each article to let them know that it’s been updated.
I bring this suggestion to your development team because as someone who uses the app everyday, I save many articles. Many times when I look up an article with the intention of saving it, I find that I have already saved it. This is a good feature. However, as I read articles, I unsave them. Once unsaved, there stands a good chance that I’ll be interested in that topic at some point in the future and forget that I had read the article, at which point I would be rereading it. Therefore, I think the addition of this feature would increase the functionality of the app for all users.
I thank the team for reading my suggestion and I hope you consider implementing it. I enjoy the app significantly and think the UI is very simple and uncluttered, unlike many others.
Sincerely,
