Translation pages should show a "Translate" tab instead of an "Edit" tab
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

It gives pretty much standard "you are not allowed to edit this page" error message. It is easy to miss the link to the translation tool.

One option would be to replace the Edit-tab with Translate-tab (maybe add also View source -tab).

Easy to do by overriding the messages in the MediaWiki namespace. Is this really a bug?

Trevor, thanks for the comment. This bug is probably asking for something more than that, like 1) transforming the "edit" tab in a link to the Special:Translate link for the page (but with what label?), or 2) making it into "view source" and maybe adding another tab. Choosing one option is probably the design question.

I think replacing the Edit tab with Translate would work - and put a "view source" either as a new tab or in the drop down.

From the above bug, "Even on the main page,
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections_2013, the
"Translate this page" text is very small."

Can we make that link more prominent too please?

The bug is that translation pages shouldn't show an "Edit" tab to anyone. It should be "View source". Adding a "Translate" tab would be a separate feature request, IMO. Updated summary accordingly.

That's debatable, "view source" is quite misleading too. Just linking Special:Translate from the usual tab would be better, and would also provide the same functionality as "view source" via its export feature (when enabled).

Adding the Translate tab is more important from my perspective than View source - people are more likely to want to translate these pages than view their source from my experience.

Since this portion of the bug is the "design" question, assigning to Pau

5 cents in case you like them:

"Edit" and "Translate" are both worth a tab.

English (source) pages could have both: "Edit" would do what it does already. "Translate" would substitute the ugly "Translate this page", which is in the way and out of place in the content area.

Translated pages would have "Translate" only. "View source" would go under the dropdown, if really needed.

Translated pages are are modified by translating them, so it makes a lot of sense to replace the "Edit" tab by the "Translate" tab. In that way we provide a consistent location for modifying content, and direct the user to the tools they need for doing so.

Related to other aspects commented that go beyond this bug:

  • View source on translated pages makes little sense and should not be emphasised. Thus, moving it to the drop-down or even removing it seem reasonable to me.
  • I agree in emphasising the "translate this page" call to action for the source language. However, I'm not convinced of adding it as a new tab. A design for the language bar template that integrates the translation actions in a more prominent way could be worth considering. I have created a couple of quick mockups at http://i.imgur.com/rH3eNTG.png to illustrate the basic idea.
