Steps to reproduce:

1.Open a page with VE
2.Click on Insert> Formula
3.Insert a formula inside then delete it

Observed Result:
An empty selection box appears

Test Environment: https://test2.wikipedia.org/
Browser: Chrome Version 26.0.1410.65 & FF 25
OS: MAC OS X 10. 8. 5

Verified the fix on Betalabs and test2

This bug is partially fixed, the empty selection box is still appearing when you first open the Math Inspector.

As per Ed, the initial empty selection box appearing on opening Math inspector is not related with this issue.So creating a separate bug for it and closing this one.

Verified the fix in production
