Maintaining language lists was unmaintainable (200+ * 200+), so years ago we switched to native-names only.

It is live. Any ideas how to implement this in other way?

Why not having both? As in <LanguageName: PageTitle>. For example, the Community portal url given in comment 0 would have for the ar: link the following tooltip: "Arabic: ويكيبيديا:بوابة المجتمع".

To all those following: help is appreciated in adding/improving the translations of the hundreds language names (we just got 100 more language names translatable), see instructions: https://translatewiki.net/wiki/CLDR#Contribute_to_an_existing_locale

@Nemo_bis : elwiki gives "Αζερμπαϊτζανικά" while CLDR gives "Αζερικά" for "az". There are many examples like this. If MediaWiki was sourcing the language names from CLDR, wouldn't these values be the same?

And, just for the record, CLDR is right in this case, not MediaWiki. What's more interesting, CLDR has been submitting this value at least since 2009! Although I'm very keen in helping CLDR with translations, why should I with examples like this one? This needs to be resolved, so that people do not feel like they work in vain.

The MediaWiki cldr extension has no reason to prefer the short variant.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I used http://www.unicode.org/repos/cldr-aux/json/22.1/main/el_GR.json as a source. It contains the same value for both primary and alternative (short) translations. So, now I know that this is a CLDR issue. Thanks a lot for clarifying, hey, this mystery had been causing me quite a headache since yesterday...

That's old data, don't use it: CLDR is now at version 29 http://www.unicode.org/cldr/charts/latest/ (cldr-aux seems deprecated/abandoned after version 26 too http://www.unicode.org/repos/cldr-aux/json/ ).

Next time please refer to http://cldr.unicode.org/index/downloads (such as the charts linked by https://translatewiki.net/wiki/CLDR ).
