Need an option to show what access keys are
Open, LowPublic

Description

I only learned that checkbox "This is a minor edit" has the access key while looking at html itself.

My suggestion:

  1. Add access key explanations like this: "This is a minor edit (Alt-i)"
  2. Add the checkbox in "Personal Preferences": "Disable access key explanations" -- for those who doesn't want to see them

This is in addition to the existing "Disable access keys" checkbox.

If implemented, more users will learn about this convenient feature.

@Yuri271 We should probably be placing that under Advanced Options in Appearance tab of Special::Preferences right ?

I think it is also beneficial if it is near existing "Disable access keys" checkbox, which is in "Gadgets". Because related options better be together. Maybe put it there in "Gadgets"?

accesskeys are set to the tooltip of the element (with javascript enabled you also get the correct ctrl or alt key), also for the minor edit checkbox. No need to look into the html.

I see no reason for a new preference in this case.

That is if people have the habit to look at the tooltips. Not many websites have meaningful tooltips (ebay doesn't, facebook doesn't), so people don't even read them. (BTW, tooltip doesn't even show when mouse is over checkbox, only when it is over text.)

Whoops, Tony already assigned this to himself hence increasing priority again. For future reference feel free to set a priority.

I could get this preference fit greatly under Appearance::Advanced options. But it looks like the interest is to get it under Gadgets, where I find it a bit odd. ( Disable access keys are under Gadgets though ).

Should not be a preference. A tooltip is probably(?) too obscure, maybe it should be shown underlined or something.

This is good to convert casual editors to power editors.

Yes, just always print an access key. There is enough space generally.

What can be easier to implement?

@01tonythomas: I am resetting the assignee of this task because there has not been progress lately (correct me if I am wrong!). This avoids the impression that somebody is working on this task. Please claim this task again when you plan to work on it (via Add Action...Assign / Claim in the dropdown menu). Thanks!
