I guess the long version of @Qgil's intentions is https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_talk:Confirmemail_body :)

I don't really see how can they be completely synced - I guess you meant "make more similar". Let's give it a shot (and not kill people by throwing a dozen of links onto them):

Hello $2,

welcome to MediaWiki.org and our community! MediaWiki is the software behind many wikis, including that of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation projects.

Yes, I meant make more similar. Your initial shot looks good to me, but this is one of these tasks where maybe others would like to join if we advertise it in mediawiki.org? Otherwise it is surely better than what we have now.

A task for March, or later?

this is one of these tasks where maybe others would like to join if we advertise it in mediawiki.org?

If you have a place on mediawiki.org in mind where to bring this up (I have nothing better in mind than https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Current_issues ) and point to this task that sounds good.
(I cannot edit/create https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Confirmemail_body )

Is there any particular reason why the welcome template isn't added automatically/regularly there?
As someone who welcomes a lot of people there, even after they've been registered/contributing for years, I've always wondered.

@Elitre I don't know, and it is a good question. At least Echo has a notification ready for new users.

No feedback within two weeks on https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Topic:Szddebkdal5k468i
Any better ideas for places?

Or "just do it and edit it"? I'm tempted but my account(s) don't have sufficient rights on mediawiki.org to create or edit https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Confirmemail_body ...

It seems to me that because of your work you should apply for more rights there anyway...

Back on topic, I believe that most of the community doesn't communicate in a central place there, so maybe wikitech-l (and ambassadors-l?) is a better place to get some attention?

Proposal in Project:Current_issues + 2 weeks of silence = Just Do It.

I don't know what is the process to get admin in mediawiki.org but considering that there are hundreds (seriously) I guess it is not complicated. I got admin from demon (Chad). I would ask him.

[[project:requests]] for rights, or anyone in the global staff groups
should have rights iirc

Proposal in Project:Current_issues + 2 weeks of silence = Just Do It.

Absolutely, I assumed the point was you really wanted feedback.

Based on the discussion here I was bold™ and (re)created https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Confirmemail_body with the following content:

Then I created a test account and checked that the "MediaWiki email address confirmation" email I received looks all correct.

Closing this task as resolved for the time being.

Thanks everybody for the input here.
