Allow other website visibility of commons file usage
Open, LowPublic

Description

Currently only WMF wiki's usage is visible on commons media files even though other sites are known to use commons images. This sometimes causes problems with file breakages on other sites when files are deleted on commons. One site that uses commons files regularly on some projects is Wikia. There are currently several wiki's at Wikia that use commons images on their wiki's. If some examples are needed I can provide.

Is it possible to show the linking of commons media on other sites besides WMF wiki's?

This would be a privacy issue i think and the danger to have promotional wikis in the file usage.

I could see where it would be a privacy issue in some cases. Maybe in those cases it could at least post something like used on an External site or something, just to give us some kind of a general idea.

Could someone please remove me form the AWB project notifications on
Phabricator.

Since I am globally blocked to support the ban I never should have gotten
on EnWP and that was only done and being kept in violation of policy I
cannot disenroll from them. Since the WMF doesn't want editors like me I
have no need for their spam.

In fact, I encourage you to close any phab tickets I submitted.

Maybe this will be enough to get someone to remove me from phabricator
since no one apparently knows how to do it or wants to walk down the hall
and talk to Aklapper.

AFAIK Aklapper doesn't work in the WMF office. I'm getting really tired of you complaining about this in all sorts of unrelated places. Don't mass subscribe people like that.

@Reguyla: As long as I don't open my front door I'm afraid noone can easily walk down some hall in my flat. :)
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/profile/1012/ implies that you are a watcher of the AWB project and hence receive notifications. You could change that if wanted, while Phabricator administrators cannot change it. Plus see the link that Krenair provided.

Please move any potential further discussion to the general Phabricator support spot: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Phabricator/Help

Thanks for the https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Phabricator/Help link
Aklapper and sorry if I misunderstood. I thought you worked in SFCA so
that's my mistake and I apologize.

The link you sent is useless to me however because my account is globally
locked. That means I cannot log into anything, not even phabricator. So,
now that it is globally locked, whether I agree with it or not, I am dead
to the WMF projects and they are dead to me. So that means I no longer have
to worry about being a positive editor. I don't have to AGF, I do not have
to notify the WMF of security flaws in software (like the ability to post
names to Phab tickets with an email address that's associated to a globally
blocked account). I don't even have to be nice. I can be a vandal, a troll
or whatever. Because there is no coming back from a global block/ban. So
fuck it, I am not going to try.

A few people wanted to treat me like an asshole for trying to improve the
projects and not just being a good little submissive editor and taking a
ban that has been bullshit and a violation of policy since day one. So
fine, now I will be an asshole. If you want to keep me connected to
Phabricator that's fine. I'll just respond to each of the spam messages I
get in the future with some porn links or some adverts for Viagra and I can
promise that within no time someone with the ability to remove me from
these notifications will arrive to do so.

I interpret the previous comment as a request to deactivate that Phabricator user account. If I misunderstood you, please see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:AKlapper_%28WMF%29 for my email address. Thanks.

This might be a good idea. Moving files breaks hotlinking and it would helpful to get info about which external sites are using a file. This is not a solution for T37721 but can be useful to detect hotlinking before moving files. Since this task is tagged with Community-consensus-needed @AlexisJazz do you think you can post a thread on Village pump (proposals)? I am busy at the moment and not sure how I can approach this.

Moving files breaks hotlinking

That should not be true anymore

Edit: i might be wrong. Maybe its only thumbnails. Im not sure

You are wrong. Do you want me to add all steps of reproduction?
